Chapter 4

It was nearly midnight and the small city had quieted for the evening as I tried to process my own actions. I settled on a bench, my head in my hands, realizing my abhorrent behavior would end the friendship with both Reese and Mimi. A few moments of self-loathing later, I felt a hand on my back, a feather light touch. I looked up and met Mimi’s icy blue eyes, regarding me with concern. Here she was, comforting me when I should’ve been groveling at her feet.

I shook my head regretfully. “Mimi, I’m so sorry.”

She sighed, removing the hand on my back, her eyes meeting mine with anguish. “What you did was messed up. She’s my girlfriend, Kelly, why would you do that?” She paused, her face reproachful, “But, she’s just as guilty.”

I had to look away from the pain in her eyes. “I’m sorry,” I repeated.
