Chapter 13

Lee dropped to a knee and praised her. “What a good girl,” he said, patting her head. “You brought me a bone or two or…four.”

Dave smiled at Lee and Cleo. “She won’t give them to you. She just wants you to know she can retrieve. She’s never caught on to the ‘give it up’ part.”

“That’s just fine, Cleo,” Lee said. “You’re doing a great job.” Cleo’s tail wagged furiously at Lee’s admiration for her prowess as a retriever.

Dave closed the door. Lee stood up. “How old is she? It’s been a while since we talked about her and her sore leg at the wedding. Ted and Larry got married over five years ago. But she doesn’t look that old.”

“Whatever happened to us, happened to her, too. She’s twelve.”

Lee looked back at the dog. “Wow! It’s all so mysterious, isn’t it?”

Dave nodded. “It sure is.”

By this time their arousal had subsided to a degree, and since the subject had been broached, Dave said, “Come on in, and we can talk about it.”
