Chapter 10

“I’d love to. By the way, my name is Sam, Sam Blake.”

I worried about telling him I was gay. What if he was just being a dick? What if he wasn’t, then what? I hardly knew the man. At least he wouldn’t try to kill me while he was in the helicopter. He’d need me alive to fly the damn thing. I gave him a rather confused smile and put it all out of my mind.

“Do you want me to narrate where we’re going and what I’m doing, what we’re seeing?”

We put on the headsets, and I ran a quick check like I always do. I told myself my usual mantra, the short version that just reminded me to breathe and be calm, and we were off, back into the darkness, with the Milky Way rising above the horizon and the shadows and the fire down below.
