Chapter 12

Steve just pointed to the bathroom. “You can borrow something of mine,” he said to her back. You could see the distaste even though she was looking the other way.

I blurted out, “We know you clean up well, but what the hell did you do all night to get so dirty? Go back out to get more film?”

“I hooked up, pardon the phrase, with some guy named Mick who was going back out, and, yes, I got some—terrific—film.” She had the grace to blush. Mick, huh…

Gordon—Jesus—ran his hands through his hair. “Well, I’m really Gordon Roderick. I’m a professor at Temple University in Pittsburgh. I took a yearlong sabbatical to see what it would be like if I lived like Jesus. There’s this book called The Year of Living Biblically, and I wanted to show everyone what it was really like, not just avoiding certain chairs and not eating shrimp or wearing mixed fabrics. It’s amazing! I guess I’d rather give it up early. It’s only been ten months, but I don’t want to die or go to jail either.”
