“Angela, thank you for voting for me to stay. I appreciate it. You saved my life. I remember, vaguely, that you slept in the living room with me so many nights. You nursed me, you walked me, you took care of me, and you cleaned me. I will never forget you for all that. You’re an angel on Earth.” He bent and kissed her lips. “I hope it was okay I did that. I care for you. A lot.”
She hugged him and turned her head into his chest. “Oh, Dustin, I care for you, too. You’re a good man. I appreciate that you saved my brother’s life year ago.”
They stood there hugging. Travis felt self-conscious and left, going outside to find Winston.
Winston was in the old garage, building a few new planter boxes for Grandpa.
Travis asked, “So what do you reallythink of Grandpa and Joy?”
“You’re concerned about the age difference.”
“Well, aren’t you?”
Winston said, “It’s their business. What’s the big deal? If they want it and agree, all we should do is wish them well.”
