Uncle Andy gathered up their stuff, including grabbing the pigs. Mouse was not happy with being swung around by a handle and complained noisily. Uncle Scooter offered Billie his hand and Billie took it. They passed through the tunnel and into the airport.
A big sign over the hall read Welcome to Virginia
Billie stopped dead in the middle of the hall, planted her feet, and started to cry. “I want to go home!” 6
Scooter was used to being stared at for a lot of different reasons.
By older people who were disgusted by his long hair. By middle-aged soccer moms who thought he was too broad, swore too much. By women who thought he was straight, and by men who knew that he wasn’t. By people at home who knew he’d been arrested and spent time in jail. By people who saw him with Andy and didn’t think they should be “rubbing it in” that they were gay.
But Scooter had never been stared at before by people who thought he was a bad parent
That was…an entirely different ball game.
