Maybe if he was a real parent, he’d know the right thing to say. “Are you going to calm down and come let the doctor look at your eyes, or do I have to carry you in there?” Shit, why did he saythat? “You missed me?” Scooter was incredulous and if he hadn’t been both half-turned on and half-terrified, he might actually have laughed. His brain ran through every possible iteration and inflection of those three words. Chris missed him. Chris missed him. Chris missed him. None of them made any sense at all. Didn’t fit with his worldview in the slightest.

“Can you doubt it?” Chris said, soft, leaning closer and Scooter wished to hell he wasn’t tipped back like he was in a goddamn dentist’s chair. “You were always the best thing in my life, I just couldn’t see it. Constant as the north star.”
