Chapter 40

By nightfall, he had to surrender to his growling stomach, so he pulled on his sweats and padded downstairs to eat something. As he stood by the bench, preparing to heat up the soup, Hank’s big truck approached.

“Great,” he muttered but didn’t attempt to hide again. He figured he wouldn’t get away with it twice in one day.

But Hank didn’t turn off the road toward the cabin. He stopped by the end of the driveway, and the passenger door opened. Someone jumped out, opened the door to the back seat, and grabbed a bag before shutting it again. Hank immediately drove away, back up the mountain.

Elliot could only see the silhouette of the mystery passenger, but as soon as he started walking, Elliot was mesmerized by never-ending legs quickly eating up the distance to the cabin.

His heart jumped in his chest. He’d recognize that gait anywhere.
