“What?” Vanni looked at him in surprise. Then he nodded slowly. “That’s…yeah. I don’t really pay attention to people there but…yeah, that’s it. Thanks.”

“You must have loved him very much,” Marsh said quietly. When Vanni froze, a flash of deep pain on his face, Marsh regretted he’d said that. “I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“No need to be and I did.” Vanni smiled at Marsh. “I suppose I could say the same of you because now that I think of it I’ve seen you there, well sort of, several times.”

“My sister, before you get the wrong idea.”

“Ah ha, so you presumed I was visiting, damn, I hate that word but what else can you call it, but anyway you presumed it was a man I was there for. Why?”

“Your face. You don’t hide your emotions very well. There was always so much pain and anguish.” Marsh paused then added. “Actually until I saw you with your friends a few weeks ago, I couldn’t have said for certain it was a man. It could have been your wife.”
