Chapter 11

Amir sent me pictures of his two young nephews playing in the snow dressed in snow suits, just as American children might be doing. “It is not as warm here in the winter as you might think, given our desert climate,” he told me. “It can be quite cold early in the morning in the winter when I am trying to catch a ride to school, and I do not have gloves. The last time we had this much snow, however, was over forty years ago. I was just a small boy and do not remember it.”

“How long will that snow be around? How long will it take to melt?” I asked.

“It is late January, so it may take a while. It only warms up to a few degrees above freezing on many days, so I’m guessing the snow will be around for a few weeks.”
