Chapter 38

“Done so soon?” Sandy asked as she handed me another Sprite.

“Jake realized he was still in love with his ex-boyfriend.”

“Ouch.”

“It’s fine. I’m happy for him. In fact, he offered me a job at the retirement home, if I want it.”

She was surprised. “Wow, really? Are you going to take it?” She broke off for a bit as she served a customer, then came back to me. “Well?”

“It’s an option. I like it here, and I have you, but I get bored with the sameness of it all, sometimes, and with people’s assumptions about me. Gets old.”

“I’ll be sorry to see you go, if that’s what you decide.”

“We’ll still keep in touch, no matter what.”

“You’d better,” she said, then lowered her brows as she glared at something behind me. “Here comes trouble.”
