Yup, all three of them were in big trouble.

“God, you make the best lasagna,” Felix said, practically moaning as they all worked their way through dinner. “Doesn’t he, boys?”

Benjy and Arnie nodded their brown-haired heads, gray eyes bright as they chewed their food.

“Why, thank you, everyone. I’m so glad to hear that,” I replied, keeping things light as I refilled glasses and asked Felix about his work in the fields. “I saw the boys with you at the tractor this afternoon, love. Were you teaching them how to fix something?”

Felix looked guilty now, but I pressed on.

“Arnie and Benjy. I assume you finished your homeschool assignments for the day? I plan to check them in the morning, so put them in the living room in the usual spot after dinner, okay?”

The boys had a “deer in the headlights” look on their faces, but I ignored it.

“Funnily enough, I found a dead bird and two dead mice in the usual places. You two wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?”
