Chapter 14

After a few minutes, I untangle myself, stand, and brush a kiss on his forehead before I take my seat and return to my sewing. “What…how did you…how…?” I make an irritated huff, not knowing how to finish the question.

“What happened to me after they threw me out?”

I nod.

“I was going to go to college, but my parents refused to pay for it, of course, so I couldn’t go. Luckily, I had some money saved up and a summer job. And the company I worked for—owned by an acquaintance of my father’s, by the way, that’s how I got the job—liked me and let me stay on after the summer. He even let me rent a room over his garage, but we never spoke about my parents.”

“That was very decent of him.”

“Yes. I suspect my father wasn’t happy about it, but I wasn’t stupid enough to question it.”
