Chapter 6

“So, you saw my hobby. What about yours?” asked Alex as he pulled out a slice.

“Not as profitable as what you do. I’m a baseball fan, and I play on a local softball team.” He was pretty good, but there was no need to brag. It was all for fun. Not like any of them were going to be recruited for the single-A’s.

“But what about this time of year?”

“Spring training starts this week for pitchers.”

Alex swallowed a bite of pizza. “Oh. I don’t follow sports, in case that wasn’t clear.”

“Not everyone does. Anyway, I’m getting into paintball, and in the off season when there are no baseball games on, I like audiobooks.” He figured that interest would be more relatable for Alex.

“I’ve never understood the appeal, unless you’re travelling. They take so long to get through.”

“Faster than reading,” said Tom, “and less stressful to boot. I’m severely dyslexic.”

Alex’s eyes widened. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be insensitive.”
