“He ruled us with an iron hand. What he said, we had to follow. He didn’t like the fact I preferred men over women, or that I had a different ambition. It wasn’t his dream for me, so it wasn’t happening. By the time I was twenty-four, my family weren’t speaking to me and I was doing menial jobs, anything so I wasn’t under Dad’s thumb. I had spent a couple of weekends in the Peak District while I was at university, so I moved here. It wasn’t difficult to get a job at Level 2.”

Michael was silent. Then he reached out and touched Spyros’ knee.

“I’m sorry, Spyros,” he murmured. “I had no idea.”

“You really didn’t dig very far, did you?” Spyros snorted. “Nice police work, Michael.”

“Fuck off.” Michael shook his head. “Your family‘s fucked up.”

“I know.” Spyros could feel the heat from Michael’s fingers on his skin. It was trickling up his thigh towards his groin. He swallowed. “What about your family? Do they care that you’re gay?”
