Shane turned to face her. At first, he couldn’t work out what she wanted. What was she saying?
She placed a hand on his back. “Are you alright?”
Slowly, Shane nodded. “I think so,” was all he could manage.
“Never mind, the ambulance will be here in a moment. Would you like me to wait with you?”
Shane didn’t know why, but he nodded.
“Let’s go over here then,” said the woman, guiding Shane to a nearby bench.
Only when he was sitting did the events of the past few minutes begin to sink in. He turned to the woman and saw she was middle-aged. Her smile was kind and there was sympathy in her eyes.
“Is he dead?”
“I don’t think so, love. He’s pretty bad, though. We’ll know more when the ambulance arrives.”
