Chapter 23

A month ago, he had been miserable. He thought he would never escape Tyler’s clutches. The beatings, the physical and verbal abuse, the psychological torture, he thought were there to stay. Never did he dare to dream they could be banished. Yet today, that Shane seemed a million miles away. The new Shane was in a loving relationship with a man who thought the world of him. He had plans to go to college. He was moving into a new home. He was free of Tyler, at least for the moment. Life could not have been better.

With the sun on his face and a cool breeze to take the edge off the heat, Shane walked to the main strip. Moving at a leisurely pace, he approached the place where it had all happened. The accident. There was still some debris, bits of plastic and glass. There were markings on the road where the police had circled whatever it is they had to draw attention to—skid marks and bloodstains.

“Did you see it?” asked a voice.
