Chapter 9

Paris dressed quickly, and instead of taking the elevator, he ran down what seemed like hundreds of stairs until he was in a vast lobby full of plants, rich-looking people coming and going, and a doorman. Once outside, he ran through a courtyard and then down a busy street.

He had walked several miles contemplating his relationship with Grant when he looked up and saw trash in the street, hobos sleeping in dark corners, and a definite smell of fish in the air. He stopped and looked around.

Where the hell am I?

He had just turned and was heading back to where he came from when he was suddenly grabbed from behind, dragged into an alley where he was tied up, and gagged. He struggled until he felt a pinprick in his arm, and then everything went dark.

He wasn’t sure how much time had passed when he woke up chained to a whipping pole, with a razor-sharp whip coming down on his back.
