“Nothing. And I’m not smiling that much, by the way.” He got rid of her with a look, and then picked up the telephone on the desk.

Anne stuck her hand out and used the pen to push the button that would have given him the line out. “You don’t fool me. And I’m tired of not knowing anything about you.”

“Because I know a lot about you, don’t I? Come on, Anne, you know our private lives don’t have much space here in the office.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. Sometimes I go and have a drink with the pathologist.”

Thomas looked at her. “And?”

“And nothing. He has a private life too, and sometimes he shares it with me. But he’s alive and still has his life. It’s not that your life is destroyed if you talk to me, you know?”

Thomas sighed.

“It’s just I don’t have a very active life. I work and then I go home. I cook. I read. Things like that.”

“So, you never fuck?”
