Chapter 8

The Caniean talked in low voices, not quite whispers but not loud either. Most nodded their heads in agreement to whatever Tahahi was saying, with a few words from Selati himself. Aleledai guessed he wasn’t up to the task of persuasion at the moment. A couple had fearful looks on their faces.

Aleledai left them to their huddle and turned to Srahuni as he approached. “All the humans secure?”

That wolfish grin was back. “We dragged them all down and left them tied in the very back. Days will pass before anyone notices they’ve gone missing.”

While it meant a couple humans might die of thirst before they were freed, Aleledai couldn’t bring himself to care. It was a kinder fate than the Caniean were given on a daily basis. So long as no human died in the ambush itself. Sneak attacks in the dark weren’t an honorable way to kill an enemy.

“Round up our team. We’re leaving here soon.” When Srahuni quirked an eyebrow, Aleledai pointed at the workers. The huddle was breaking up.
