Chapter 37

A curve in the line was possible, except for the terrain around those barracks. The humans had built it close to the forest, in a spot of foliage too dense for the Caniean to maneuver their big bodies through. Before the forest thinned out, the edge of the cliff began and ran half the width of the field. If the humans managed to cut off their right flank, the Caniean were trapped. Worse, those humans couldn’t be ignored, which meant those barracks had to be neutralized.

Aleledai knew all of this, but Selati recognized his All needed to vent his very real fears concerning their chances of success.

Selati did the only thing he could think of, the one thing that might ease Aleledai’s mind, for the moment. He pulled Aleledai into his arms again and tucked his mate close to his body, as though he could squeeze out Aleledai’s fear and uncertainty. The puff of ragged breath against his collar bone told Selati that he was right. “If it will help, tell me your fear.”
