Curious of Cissy’s assumption, I asked, “What makes you think he’s there?”

“I just do.”

“That’s not tangible, Cissy. You have to give me more than that to go on.”

“A wife knows,” she said, which I interpreted as: Stop wasting time and get to Country’s Duty, which is exactly what I did.

Before leaving for Country’s Duty, I was visited by Benny Sting in my office. He helped himself to the chair on the other side of my desk and asked for something strong to drink.

“Sorry, I’m an alcoholic.”

“Water will suffice, young man.”

I fetched him a glass of ice and water, passed it to him, and said, “I suppose you’re here to learn about the details I have compiled concerning your son’s death.”

“You’re a very smart detective.”

I told him everything I knew about Myer Colt, Max Martin, and Dash Shore, my three main suspects in the murder case.

Benny didn’t flinch in his seat and said, “You’ve been busy.”

“I’m trying.”
