“Have a nice day,” said the man as he exited.

“You, too,” Jock replied as the doors closed once more.

Eric remained silent.

Seconds later, the bell pinged again and the doors opened onto the fourth floor.

“This is us,” said Jock. “It’s just down here. Room 418.”

Eric followed him to his room.

“It’s nicer than mine,” said Eric. “Brighter.”

“What can I get you?” asked Jock, opening the mini-bar and taking out some milk. “Coffee? Tea?”

“Or me.”

Jock looked at him, puzzled. “Sorry?”

“You know, coffee, tea or me? It’s an old…” Suddenly, Eric wished he hadn’t said anything. “It’s nothing. I’m fine, actually. I don’t want anything.”

“Oh. Okay. I’ll put this back, then.” He replaced the milk, then pulled of his shoes and socks. “Make yourself comfortable.”
