“Well, yes. Can you, maybe, ask your friends, see if there’s someone you can stay with over Christmas? The house is just going to be so crowded with your aunt and uncle coming to visit, if Lisa’s going to be living here, too.”

“Absolutely.”

“Hey, Beau.” He managed not to jump in shock, but it was a near thing. The chicken coop’s ceiling was low and he hadn’t exactly been expecting company.

He turned. Donna, dressed in a dark blue sailor dress, smiled at him hesitantly. “My mama sent me over to borrow a few eggs. We had us an accident this morning and mama can’t make chess pie without fresh eggs.”

“Accident. Yeah.”

Dee rolled her eyes. “Well, what was I supposed to say, smartass? She’s not happy that we’re broke up and thinks I should come over and bother you into being my boyfriend again.”

“What’d she do, drop a half-dozen on the floor?” Beau shuffled his feet; the chickens that weren’t roosting were clustered around his boots and he didn’t want to kick any of them.
