Chapter 4

“Existing is not living. You sold the condo and rented a dingy basement to live in. You’ve quit your job and hardly ever go out. It’s time for positive changes in your life.” She blew out an exasperated sigh. “I love you, Dad. I know you loved Mom, but she’s gone and it’s time for you to move on with your life. You’re fifty-five with plenty of living ahead of you.”

I wondered if she might be was right. I’d been in a routine for so long that when Jennifer died, my world jarred to a stop and I felt helpless. “You’re likely correct, Julia, but change doesn’t happen easily, especially for a man my age.”

“Well, at least keep up with the gym. It’s a start in the right direction.”

We exchanged a few pleasantries before she finished the call. I looked around the small place I rented. The proceeds from the condo sale, my severance from work, and Jennifer’s life insurance ensured that money was no problem. The bulk of it was sitting in a low-interest chequing account.
