Chapter 34

The fact was, I wanted to be with Lucas for as long as he would let me. And I was hoping beyond hope that it was for the long haul.

I was so lost in contemplation that the knock on the door surprised me and I jumped. The cat was not amused and jumped down while telling me off. I ignored him in favor of answering the door. I couldn’t imagine who it would be. The outside door locked automatically, and no one could get into the building without a key or being buzzed in. I wasn’t expecting anyone, and I barely knew my neighbors. Someone must have the wrong apartment.

I peeked through the peephole and then scrambled to get the door unlocked and pulled open. There was no mistaking the face on the other side.

Lucas was in my arms the instant the door shut behind him, holding me so tightly I could barely breathe. I squeezed him back just as hard, loving the feel of him in my arms. Breathing was overrated anyway.
