“Up now, get dressed and ready. We’ve a busy day ahead of us. Today your lessons begin in earnest and I’ll not have you sloughing off.”

He turned about and bounded down the stairs, taking them in twos.5

From then on, even as Cory predicted, the lessons became much more intense and demanding. Although there were no overt punishments, Driz felt his master’s disapproval and disappointment each time he fell short. And such occurrences were frequent. To see a bit of scorn or displeasure in Cory’s expressive eyes hurt like a slap. He found he wanted nothing more than to please this demanding teacher and make him proud. By slow degrees, he improved.
