Meanwhile, the former premier and the dark-tainted mage were given a speedy trial and condemned to death. Although magedom was always reluctant to deal such final punishment, everyone agreed the two wicked ones had strayed so far to the evil side there was no hope of recovery or redemption. The danger they would never cease to pose was too great to allow them to live.

No firing squad or gallows was required. Five of the senior mages, selected in a random drawing, placed the two miscreants against a massive wall. Then they beamed so much energy through them that they both evaporated into the ether, vanishing as if they had never existed. Such energies as remained drifted away into the universe to be absorbed into the great pool, dispersed too much for any identity to linger.
