Chapter 7

“Thank you.”

Holden’s smile transformed his entire face. “You’re very welcome. All you have to do is ask.”

There was something in his tone that made me think he meant more than just right now, while I was recovering. But my tired brain couldn’t parse it out.

“You rest now. If you need me, just call. I’ll wake you in four hours for another pill.”

“I don’t want you to have to—” I stopped when I saw his expression. I swallowed hard and rethought my statement. “I’m sure I’ll be fine until morning.”

“I disagree. I think that, at least for the first few days, it’s important to stay ahead of the pain so that you can rest thoroughly.” And the firmness in his voice had me nodding agreement without even realizing.

He gave a single nod and headed out of the room.
