Chapter 30

“I’d never tell you not to come over, Mom. But the doughnuts go a long way to smooth things over.” I gave her a wink, and she laughed again, this time sounding more real.

She led the way into the kitchen, and I got the coffee going. Ten minutes later, we each had a steaming mug of the delicious brew and were munching on baked goodness. The apple fritters were my favorite, and she’d brought three. If I wasn’t careful, I’d eat them all in one go.

“Your father tells me I’m overbearing.”

I sputtered and was glad I wasn’t drinking. I stared at her, and she smiled and waved it away,

“It’s not the first time. He tells me that regularly. I just usually choose to ignore him. You’re my children and I have the right to push myself into your lives.”

Well, that wasn’t true, but I wasn’t going to debate the point with her. At least not yet. I wanted to see where she was going with this.
