The whispered words of love reached my ears and made emptiness bloom in my chest. Why did I subject myself to this? I should excuse myself and go back to my dogs; at least they loved me.


“We’d like to ask you something.” Preston let go of his husband’s hand and slung his arm around Sawyer’s shoulders.


Sawyer snuggled deeper into Preston’s side as his fingers started tapping out a tattoo on his thigh. “It might be an unusual question, but I need you to know it’s from the both of us.”


My eyebrows shot up and I tilted my head to the side. My interest was definitely piqued.


“Right.” Sawyer bounced on his toes. He met my gaze head on, making the tapping and bouncing seem more like an outlet for energy than nerves. “We want to take you out on a date.”


Had I heard that correctly? “A date?”
