“And they are supposed to arrive today?”
“Yes.”
“Then I have to say it’s highly unlikely they’ll change their minds about coming here to live with you.”
Always so thoughtful and earnest and loyal. I smiled at him. “Thank you. That made me feel a lot better, actually.” Especially coming from him, but I didn’t say it out loud. But he’d come around these last couple of weeks. Like I’d known all along he would.
“You’re welcome.”
We drank our tea in silence for a few minutes. The dogs lay sleeping next to us, the fire crackled, and the morning birds had started to wake. The sky wasn’t as intensely black as it had been a few moments ago and I could even see a couple stars now. I was happy that the clouds had started to disappear; I wanted today to be sunny and bright in celebration of the momentous occasion in my life.
Jackson sighed. “I just wish…”
“What do you wish?”
