Anne continued looking at him. “My friend, you have some problems. Do you want to tell me what’s happening?”

“He’s young, okay? And he’s…I think he doesn’t have a…regular life. He isn’t…right for me.”

Anne didn’t say a word; she hit him with her icy gaze, waiting.

“But dammit, I want him and I can’t help it. After so much time, I…I want somebody again.”

“And thank God!” she exclaimed, lifting her arms. “So, what’s the problem? I don’t care if he is young and I don’t…Oh, shit, wait a minute. It’s the guy from the hospital, isn’t him? It’s him!”

Thomas shook his head emphatically, only to realize that sooner or later Anne would discover everything and he would have nothing left to deny. She hadn’t just seen Elias at the hospital, but she had seen the roundup. He didn’t know how to tell her it was the same person. He didn’t know why she had thought of the guy at the hospital, but it was time to open up to her.

“Listen, let’s take a break now, and I’ll explain it you, okay?”
