Chapter 63

Sean is strangely taciturn and I can’t avoid thinking about the look he had on his face for most of lunch, and the way Charlie was observing him…I feel like I really put my foot in my mouth back there. I’m like a bull in a china shop, causing damage without realizing it.

“Is everything all right?” I turn to Sean, who’s walking with his hands in his pockets, a fake relaxed look on his face. I know it’s fake because he doesn’t look at me. Sean always looks at me. And it’s one of the things we sometimes discuss because I don’t feel good about being stared at yet. The fact he hasn’t looked at me once since leaving Charlie and Frank’s house makes me think there’s something wrong. I see him hunch his shoulders and smile a little. It isn’t one of his usual thousand-watt smiles.

“Yes, everything’s fine,” he answers, glancing at me briefly.
