Chapter 25

Too many thoughts ran through his mind, of his leaving the chocolates and the key inside, of taking a couple of minutes to regain his composure. On one level, his thinking was nothing but bullshit, but he couldn’t deny his hands trembled. He almost dropped the key even as he withdrew it from a pocket. The piece of jagged metal skittered around the lock as he tried to insert it. His thoughts became acidic. A catalogue of words ran through his mind—envisioned insults made by Jay and April, supposed friends. His only true friends, really. Long-term. Their relationships on the verge of shattering meant he’d never get to spend time with either sibling again.

The overhead light struck the small shiny piece of metal, causing a bright spot to dance in his vision. “Are you sure?” he had asked April when she gave him the key.
