Fifteen minutes later, he set to work, still struggling with self-pity. Five minutes after someone kicked him in the leg. He cursed, and emerged from under the car bonnet to find April standing there glaring.

“Are you trying to get mugged?”

Never mind muggers. His leaving the door unlocked had allowed in someone worse.

“I could kill you, you know that? Do you know what Jay did all week?”

Yes, but he didn’t say so, didn’t see the relevance. Part of the agreement of their needing a time out and would leave things until the New Year was so he and Jay could spend Christmas with their respective families. Setting their concerns aside enabled them to enjoy the season, and maybe by the time they saw each other again both men would have a clearer idea what they wanted. That was the idea anyway.
