Chapter 72

“He’s fine,” I say, looking back at Jamie. “You’re the one who looks a little anxious, I have to say.”

“So, you think he’s ready to work those twenty hours a week?”

“Yeah, he enjoys it. He comes home with a sense of accomplishment.”

“His progress is unbelievable.” Jamie sips his water, watching the door again. “Almost too unbelievable.”

“You think he’s gonna come apart?” I lean in. “Tell me. Is that what’s on your mind?”

Jamie sighs, looking back at me. “He’s very intelligent. And he has so much faith. If anyone can pull through something like this, he can. That being said, I still think Craving’s Creek is a bad idea.”

We leave next week. July thirteenth. Though I’ve tried to dissuade him by every possible means, Alistair won’t change his mind. He’s determined to go through with this.
