Chapter 22

“What’s going on between us?” I whisper again.

“I…I want to speak to my mom before I tell you about it.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, she’s the record keeper. She…knows things.”

“But you said she’d never let you out of her sight again if you returned.”

He winces as he remembers. “True. But if this is what I think it is, she’ll understand. At least, I hope so. It…changes things.”

I rub my hands over my face; I have a hundred questions, but I don’t know where to start.

“I’ll call her tomorrow and then we’ll talk, okay?”

I shove the questions swirling in my mind behind a door and lock the mental key. I’ll do my best to be patient. “Yeah, okay.”

He bumps his knee against mine. “Go to sleep.”

I nod and stand. “Good night.”
