“I’m sorry to hear that. I never would have suspected anything was wrong between you two. You both seemed really great together when Ryan and I were at your place.”
“Yeah, well, Patrick and I are adept at showing people what we want them to see. Your little boyfriend’s very good at it, too.”
That statement caught me off guard and I almost choked on my mouthful of whiskey. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked after a brief coughing fit.
“Nothing,” Clay said with a wave of his hand. “Forget I said anything.”
Even though he was giving me an out to steer the conversation away from Ryan, I couldn’t let him or myself off the hook that easily. “You think Ryan’s not being real with me?”
“I didn’t say that. Look, I think Ryan is adorable, but…”
“But what?”
“Maybe he was just trying too hard. Of course, that’s to be expected when you meet someone for the first time and want to make a good impression, but I’m not convinced there isn’t something else going on with him.”
