“That’s a hell of a black eye,” I said, touching Ryan’s face. “What did you and your roommate fight about?”

“Everything,” he answered vaguely, moving away.

“Maybe it’s time for a new roommate.”

“Our lease is up when the quarter ends.”

“What if you two get into it again before then?”

“We won’t. Look, it’s over and done with and I don’t want to talk about it anymore. Can we just fuck now?”

“Are you sure that’s what you want?”

“Of course it’s what I want. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t.”

We retired to the bedroom for sex that, for me, felt uneven. Ryan was passive-aggressive, begging to be fucked, then just lying there and taking it once the actual fucking started. There was none of the usual heat and intimacy I normally felt with him. Clearly, he had other things on his mind, and being with me wasn’t one of them.
