Chapter 13

“At twenty Steel was living near the Birmingham Bridge. Second floor. A comfortable flat. He had two roommates, one of which he didn’t get along with. The guy’s name was Gregory Peach, which is kind of ironic because Steel thought him to be the opposite and burned down his bedroom. Cause: hate for Peach. Ignition: a Camel cigarette. Outcome: the local authorities claimed that Peach was inside the room sleeping. He smoked Camels, which was said to start the fire. Another accident? Maybe. Maybe not. No one knew that Steel started the fire by placing a lit cigarette between Peach’s two fingers. Peach died three days later from the burns covering ninety-five percent of his body. End game.

“I never bring up Steel’s history to him. There’s no confrontation with him about his past. What’s done is done in his life, Jason. Neither of us can change such evil doings.”
