Chapter 8

“Look, I can promise you this. You won’t see centaurs galloping along the road, or fairies at the bottom of the garden. We don’t have secret handshakes. You won’t know another like us justby looking at them. Fullbloods are a different matter. I have no idea what power they might have. We just get on with our lives and trust the guardians who protect the portals to stop any potential invasions. If the guy who gave you that was a Fullblood, then it would be the first time in my life I’ve had any involvement with one. More likely is he’s a Halfblood like us.”

“What do I do?” Shaw asked.

“What did he say? Precisely. The one who gave you the amulet.”

“Drake? That he’d come back. But if he didn’t, someone else would.” Shaw fingered the amulet the way he did whenever he brought Drake to mind.

“Then, I guess either he or someone else will contact you. To get the amulet back.”

“What about Drake? Will he be okay?” Shaw fingered the amulet.
