Chapter 14

“Did either of you see anything around nine this morning?” I asked Freddie and Curtis concerning the earlier incident. “It allegedly happened right down there.”

The three of us turned to face the intersection a couple hundred yards away.

“It would have been about the time you opened the shop for the day, right?”

“Archie’s okay?” Curtis wanted to be sure. “Totally fine?”

“Thankfully, yes.” I took a breath. “Ralph saw him in time to stop.”

“I didn’t catch any of it, I’m afraid.” Curtis took Freddie’s hand.

“Me, neither.”

“You two were together all morning?”

“On and off,” Curtis answered. “I would have been in the back going through the morning deliveries. The flowers arrive quite early, but I don’t sort through them until we flip the sign in the morning.”
