A bit later they walked into Donovan’s. Because it was a Monday, it wasn’t nearly as busy as it had been Saturday night, so they were able to find seats at the bar. Once they had their beers, Jake turned to face the room, scanning it for any sign of Fabian. He didn’t see him, but he did spot Codie and Link, pointing them out to Russ.
Codie saw them and waved. Taking that as an invitation to join them, Jake and Russ did.
“Slumming, or still on the lookout for Fabian?” Codie asked.
“Hoping he shows up tonight,” Jake replied. “I take it he hasn’t so far.”
“Not that I’ve seen, but we’ve only been here for twenty minutes or so.”
Jake leaned back, again scanning the room to no avail.
“Smile,” Russ whispered. “You look like you’re about to be led to your execution.”
Jake did smile, which earned him a pat on the leg from Russ. Then the four men chatted about this-and-that for a while, with Jake still checking out the other men in the room, looking for Fabian.
