Chapter 47

Kelly and Carol greeted him when he walked into the office as if he’d been injured in battle and needed their sympathy. He accepted it a graciously as possible, considering he didn’t agree. As far as he was concerned, other than having to be careful not to stress his wounds, he was back to normal.

He set to work, checking what was on his schedule for the day. The first thing was doing background checks for one of their regular clients. As he set to it, he wondered if Kelly, or Carol, had juggled things around to give him that job so he would have to remain physically inactive, so to speak.

He finished that job around one and got up, saying he was going to get lunch.

“No, you’re not,” Kelly retorted. “Tell me what you want and I’ll get it.”

That’s what brought on his, “Will you stop babying me” comment.

Kelly sighed. “I’m not. Damn it, Jake, you went through hell. You need to ease it back a notch and accept the fact you’re not up to par, yet.”
