Chapter 9

This was not a Trogue and probably not a bear, but he had no idea what the creature was. It seemed to be covered in shaggy fur, a mixture of white and dark gray, mottled like the coat of a blue merle dog. Two glowing eyes shone out of what must be its face, centered in a rounded hump perched on the bulk of its enormous, vaguely humanoid body.

A bear? A yeti? A two-legged humanoid clad in an enormous fur suit? He realized he’d not seen anything that could possibly be the obverse of the gate they’d passed through. There was nowhere to run or to hide.
