Chapter 16

“Acceleration in T minus five. Four. Three. Two. And here we go, gentlemen. We’re about to enter hyperdrive. Next stop, home.”

The Emmybegan to accelerate. I let my mind wander over the time I’d spent with these men. Once we returned to Terra, the team would split up. Hank would go home to his wife and kids, Ed would go wherever the Air Force sent him and so would I, although I’d make damn sure we never bunked together again. As for Doc…He was the one I’d miss the most, and who knew when I would see him again?

“Hey, Doc, once we get back, suppose we meet for—”

And then all hell seemed to break loose as a baby elephant dropped down on me, keeping me pinned to my seat.

“Wh-what’s happening?”

“Speed’s increasing instead of decreasing.” Ed shouted. “Almost thirty miles per second. Sixty miles per second.” His voice became strident. “A hundred and twenty—”

“C-core temperature’s reaching the d-danger point.” It sounded as if Hank was struggling to get the words past his lips.
