Chapter 21

Ed’s wife had been gone for more than three years, and the scuttlebutt was he hadn’t had a woman since then.

Could that be why he periodically challenged Nick? In order to push him to the point where Nick took control of the situation, threw Ed down onto the nearest flat surface and fucked him, and Ed could say it hadn’t been his choice?

I had no right to pry into Nick’s love life, but he deserved better than that, and frankly, I expected him to take a swing at Carlyle. I knew I wanted to.

But Nick grinned at him. “I’ll cut out the waistband of my shorts. I don’t mind going raw for the cause.”

That got a laugh from all of us, even Ed.

By now the fire was hot enough to roast dinner, and he spitted the carcass and set it over the fire. Fat spattered into the flames, causing them to shoot up and lick over the meat; the scent was mouth-watering.

“Sorry it’s a little charred,” Nick said. “Doc was always a better cook.”
