Chapter 35

We began walking toward the museum. The ground was soggy and sucked at our boots.

The closer we got, the more we could see what poor condition it was in.

And then finally we stood before it.

“Do we just walk in?” As keen as Hank had been only minutes ago, now he seemed reluctant to go further.

Nick’s gaze ran over the ground. He spotted a rock and picked it up. “Anything can be used as a weapon,” he murmured. “I’ll go first. Ed, bring up the rear, and keep your eyes peeled.”

“I’m the captain,” Ed muttered, but he found a branch and managed to break it into a manageable length. He gripped it tightly and followed Nick’s orders.

“It’s military policy to send out a scout. If I’m not back in a few minutes…” The corner of Nick’s mouth kicked up in a rueful grin. “You’d better come and get me.”

“I don’t think so,” I snapped.

“Easy, you’ll leave me to my fate?” He pressed a hand to his heart.

“Of course not. I’m coming with you.”
