Chapter 40

“Well, I’ll not do it. Charlotte suggested it as well, but at least she doesn’t know—” Nick sat up again and this time threw back the covers. “How could I marry some poor girl, knowing I could never truly want her that way? And to do so only for her fortune?” Nick sounded outraged as he got off the bed. “My father married my mother for her fortune and never loved her. He made her miserable, throwing it in her face that he’d only married her to shore up the title and taking up with other women. Then he squandered her fortune and shot himself, leaving her humiliated and us destitute. Do you think I would ever do that to some poor, unsuspecting woman?”
